Port Chester, NY (06/18/16)

We made our setlist and added Kidd Funkadelic Michael Hampton to the live version of DWG (even tho he’s been a studio member awhile) to be a killer fuckin’ band if Bernie wanted to sit in. Now it’s a straight up tribute to Bernie–we’ve all played with him and have known him for years, but nothing like Mike Hampton’s years in the trenches doing god’s work recording the soundtracks to our lives with Dr. Woo.

There are things in life (if you’re as lucky and fortunate as I have been) that just don’t seem possible. Meeting and playing with Yoko and Sean, watching Neil Young from behind Crazy Horse play “Hey Hey My My”, touring and recording with the Meat Puppets, and then this. I’ve established a good friendship with Mike Hampton that grows every day–but I never cross the line and suggest that we play “Maggot Brain”. It’s just too powerful of a song and needed to be saved for a special occasion. Unfortunately this time that occasion was the death of our mutually close friend Jeff Rusnak yesterday. Michael called this one out—if you could transport me back in time to when I used to play along with Eddie Hazel’s famous recording of this, I would have never, ever, thought that I would end up on a stage playing it note for note next to Mike (and he was using my guitar, pedals and amplifier) and hearing this screaming from an amp behind me. I was in disbelief, total shock that my life would lead me to that moment. but here it is, in HD as well. If you haven’t been to an Invitational Jam you need to come immediately—-this was the greatest thing that was ever performed at John and Peter’s, ever–and one of the highlights of my life, not just my musical life, my entire life.

New Song “Garry” From Toas, New Mexico

Here’s a song from my forthcoming album called “Garry”. It is another ballad (I’m becoming the king of the ballads somehow) dedicated to Garry Shider. hopefully he’s the last funkateer that I write a ballad for—his influence on me was immeasurable and hopefully this song does his memory and legacy some justice. Brother’s Keeper featuring Glenn McClelland on keyboards are the backing band—best band in the world. Enjoy! Filmed at Taos Mesa Brewery in Taos, New Mexico in July of 2014.

Wow - Where To Begin

I spent pretty much the whole month of August doing gigs in Colorado, New Mexico, the Midwest, the East Coast, etc. With a few different lineups as well—Brothers Keeper w/Glenn McClelland were the backing band in Colorado and NM and the tour was devastatingly tasty. Completely different setlists than the east coast gigs with the DWG, a lot more Ween tunes in Colorado and I am the primary lead singer, like I sing every song except 2, and I’m working on my mic skills in the hopes that eventually I’ll be the full-time singer. I used to sing a lot better, like when I was 13 years old, then puberty kicked in and now I sorta just grunt and howl like a wounded animal. People don’t seem to mind so much. We played a bunch of songs that had never been performed live, “Falling Out”, “Sweetheart in the Summer”, “Pink Eye on my Leg”, etc.
